Visiting Research Fellow

Khondokar Shakhawat Ali, a sociologist, researcher, and founder of the Knowledge Alliance, has joined BIGD as a Visiting Research Fellow. He was one of the key architects in developing civil society activism such as Bijoy Mela (1989-1990) in Chittagong, Local Government Support Group (2000- 2003) and the Shushikkha Andolon (2004-2008), a citizen initiative on local government and primary education. He completed his Masters in Sociology from Chittagong University in 1994. He studied at the University of Wales, Swansea, UK and IIRR, Philippines in 1998 and 2001.

Shakhawat has more than 27 years of experience as a sociologist, researcher and teacher. He was Executive Editor at Protichinta(2013-2021) a journal on society, economy and politics. He is currently working as Emeritus Fellow, Unnayan Sammanny and. In 2001, he joined Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) where he worked for almost 17 years as a research fellow. Earlier, he worked in Program for Research on Poverty Alleviation (PRPA), Grameen Trust and Gonoshahajjo Sangastha (GSS).

He has taught at City University (2002-2012) and ASA (2017-2018) University as a faculty member for almost 10 years in Sociology, Research Methodology and Development Studies. In addition, Shakhawat also worked for development partners such as DFID, World Bank, Sida, Swiss Embassy, Netherlands Embassy and Canadian High Commission and International NGOs ActionAid, Save the Children, Plan International and NETZ Bangladesh. He also worked for UN organizations, UNDP, UNICEF and UNESCO.

He has written more than 30 research and evaluation reports on education, development, technology, NGOs in development, fundamentalism, gender, governance, etc. He has authored several books including Mobile Financial Service in Bangladesh: Success, Prospect and Challenges published in 2017, Porarthoporotar Anandodarshan (2022)
