The Performance of Selected Commercial Organic Fertilizers on the Growth and Yield of Bush Beans in Central Uganda

This randomised complete block design used field trials at Kabanyolo and Nkozi locations in Uganda for two agricultural seasons between 2017 and 2018 to assess the performance of the fertilisers and local farmyard manure on bush beans. The study detected a significant variation between the nutrient content reported on the labels and that in the laboratory reports and found that less costly local manure had significantly higher nutrient content than some organic fertilisers. It also showed inconsistencies in the average yield increase due to the extreme weather conditions experienced in both seasons. The main aim of this study is to assess the quality of selected commercial organic fertilizers on the market in comparison with local farm yard manure. Results showed that local manure had higher nutrient content compared to some of the organic fertilizer brands like Biogrow. Therefore, farmers can use locally available farm yard manure which is less costly and cheap to access than Biogrow fertilizers.
