The 2013 collapse of the Rana Plaza factory complex drew global attention to factory safety and worker rights in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry. Since then, factory buildings have become safer and manufacturers have begun to work with labour unions on factory safety monitoring. This research brief examines how the Rana Plaza catastrophe is remembered, what has changed in the industry, and what needs to happen to build a garment industry fit for 21st century Bangladesh.
