Suggestions for Constitutional Reform for a Functional, Accountable Democracy

This position paper reflects on the transformative aspirations of the August 2024 student-led movement, which demanded the government’s resignation and the creation of a new political system to prevent authoritarianism. Leaders of Students Against Discrimination emphasized rebuilding an inclusive political community and strengthening institutions to check executive dominance. The movement aimed to establish a compassionate, equitable Bangladesh where people of all religions, ethnicities, and gender identities coexist. Throughout August and September 2024, leaders called for a “new social contract” and “new political settlement,” underscoring the need for comprehensive institutional reforms, including constitutional changes, to ensure inclusivity and end all forms of discrimination.
