In BRAC’s words at the time, “A program designed by, directed towards and to be implemented by women”: The Jamalpur project in partnership with UNICEF played a defining role in BRAC’s ways of working with poor rural women. From 1972 to 1975, BRAC shifted their focus from humanitarian needs to rural development. In consequence, UNICEF requested BRAC to provide a Functional Education Program to 840 destitute women in Jamalpur town. Initially deciding to run for a short term, the program was extended to a year with proper objectives. The objectives of the program encompassed educating women about their problems, joint economic activities, hygiene, and other aspects that will empower them socially and economically. This report illustrates the comprehensive approach that was designed to implement these objectives and the evaluation methods that were adopted for the feasibility and effectiveness of the project.
