Food Price Hikes in Bangladesh: Causes and Consequences

Despite steady GDP growth, Bangladesh has faced persistent food price inflation, peaking at 14% in November 2024. A rapid study by BIDS, BIGD, and SANEM combined supply chain analysis with a nationwide phone survey to examine rice, fish, poultry, eggs, and vegetables. The study identifies high input costs, structural inefficiencies, farmer reliance on intermediaries, and urban wholesaler market power as key drivers, disproportionately burdening low- and middle-income urban households.
