Digital Financial Services and Women’s Empowerment: Experimental Evidence from Tanzania

This working paper examines how digital financial services impact women’s empowerment through a randomized control trial in Tanzania. The researchers worked with 152 female microfinance groups, where some groups were randomly selected to switch from cash to mobile money for loan repayments. The study found that this switch led to increased use of mobile money for other transactions, greater control over finances by women, enhanced household empowerment, and shifts in spending patterns toward items aligned with women’s preferences.
