The workshop, titled “Child Development to Human Capital: Leveraging Social Protection for Social Mobility,” was held on Sunday, 17 May 2026, at the BRAC Centre Auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was jointly organized by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) at BRAC University and Oxford Policy Management (OPM), through its Data and Evidence to End Extreme Poverty (DEEP) and Thrive programs, both funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The workshop brought together policymakers, researchers, practitioners, government representatives, and development partners to discuss how social protection and early childhood development (ECD) can be better integrated to strengthen human capital and promote intergenerational social mobility in Bangladesh. Despite Bangladesh’s remarkable progress in reducing poverty and improving human development outcomes, evidence presented during the workshop highlighted that opportunities for upward intergenerational mobility remain constrained for many households. The workshop explored how social protection, human capital development, and labor market policies can work together to address this challenge and create more equitable pathways to opportunity across generations.
