The government needs to spend Tk 56 billion immediately to provide one month’s food support to the poor who have lost jobs and are in risk of food insecurity, suggests a new study. Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) and BRAC Institute for Governance and Development (BIGD) jointly unveiled a rapid response survey on Poverty Impact of COVID-19 on Thursday. The study, conducted between April 04 and 12, finds that food insecurity has started unfolding among the poor with nutritional decline but the crisis is likely to intensify by the end of April. COVID-19 is having an impact on both existing poor and “new poor” who the research agencies say were 40 per cent above the poverty line but now have gone below the poverty line after the pandemic.
