Action for Sustainable Development, the Permanent Mission of Costa Rica, the Permanent Mission of Denmark, Southern Voice and the UN Foundation, CSW65 hosted an event on ‘Protecting and Promoting Civic Space in Recovery: A Cross-Regional Study’ on March 23, 2021, 7:00 – 8:30 PM BDT.
The protection of civic space remains a difficult task in times of crisis; in many places, state measures to mitigate the impact of the pandemic have indirectly led to an increase in online and offline attacks, limiting the ability of women and girls to effectively participate in society and in decision-making. At this parallel event, research and analysis from the Southern Voice Think Tank Network offered a basis for a cross-regional discussion on current realities, presenting recently compiled data on the effects of COVID-19 on access to civic spaces from a gendered-lens.
Pragyna Mahpara, Research Associate, Gender and Social Transformation, BIGD shared that in Bangladesh, the shift of activism to the digital space due to COVID19 had both encouraged and constrained women’s participation in the civic space (both informally and formally, through state restrictions). The closing reflections were given by H.E. Rodrigo Carazo, Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations, about the mechanisms within a long-term response to COVID-19 that will support gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in civic space.
