The number of the new poor in the country stands at around 3.24 crore and 10 per cent of the people migrated to villages from urban areas amid the Covid pandemic since March 2020 are staying in the villages, finds a survey. The rate of the new poor increased by around 5 percentage points in six months ending in August, standing at 19.54 per cent at the end of the month against 14.75 per cent in March, according to the joint survey of the Power and Participation Research Centre and the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development.
