BIGD works on various social and economic issues, among which labour rights is one area of focus. The platform economy is a new emerging sector globally, which has provided an avenue of work to a largely underemployed population of young people in Bangladesh. However, our research on the platform economy highlighted how digital technology can impact platform workers’ employment conditions and working practices to the detriment of workers’ wellbeing. They are prone to facing many precarities even though they are not classified under the labour laws.
Therefore, BIGD has decided to become a Fairwork supporter to stand for the rights of platform workers. BIGD strongly believes in the Fairwork principles of fair platform work and wants to endorse the bench set by Fairwork with its five principles: fair pay, fair conditions, fair contracts, fair management, and fair representation.
BIGD supports these principles and encourages all employees and affiliated partners to use the Fairwork ratings as a selection criterion when using digital labour platforms.
This is also an invitation to other organisations to join us and Fairwork in our efforts to contribute to a fairer future of work in the digital platform economy.
