
On 3 December 2020, BRAC hosted a LIVE webinar on poverty resilience, climate and disaster tolerance and urban development. The issues and problems were portrayed and prospective solutions were discussed. Inclusive urban management, climate, disaster resilience strategies in the strategic planning of local government is essential to achieve the goals of sustainable development. Mayors from different cities, experts and researchers shared their thoughts and suggestions for further enhancement. BIGD’s Executive Director, Dr Imran Matin and former Assistant Professor of BIGD and Head of Capacity Building and Partnership, Dr. Md. Shahnewaz Hossain also participated in this live discussion. Dr. Imran Matin shed light to the dimensions of urban social protection action plan, labour market intervention and social insurance. The strategic direction of urban social protection will be to import programmes from the rural areas to the urban areas, to introduce social insurance and to devise programmes measures to tackle the challenges of urban poor. He also mentions that empowered, accountable city governments and strong citizens by consolidation and coordination engagement is essential. Neither the government nor the NGOs have a comprehensive approach or broader policy prepared to tackle the urban social protection challenge yet. Therefore, knowledge, advocacy, and programmatic partnership with the urban poor is much needed for holistic inclusivity. The broader goal of the urban strategy is to integrate and merge the system into the overall national social protection system of the country.
