Position Summary
BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), BRAC University, seeks a dedicated and detail-oriented field research assistant who is enthusiastic about agricultural field activities. The person will be stationed at the site (Baniajuri, Ghior, Manikganj), and his or her duties include monitoring crop yield, crop measurement, resources used and keeping a log of records of all the events and measurements. The field research assistant will prepare and provide the records in a specified database format (in Excel) and coordinate with the local farmers, station officers and research associates daily. 

Job Responsibilities

The Field Researcher will primarily observe, monitor and carefully maintain log records of crop growth stage, crop yield (especially rice), weed and pest infestation, and irrigation, fertilizer and harvesting. The Field Researcher is expected to give attention to detail and will ensure that the collected data are accurate and reliable to use in purpose of a journal article. He or she will coordinate with the farmers, and project officers regularly, and directly report to the Research Associates.  Overall reports to be presented to the supervisor and the implementation partners. 

Core responsibilities include:

  • Field monitoring and crop observation:

Observe crop growth daily. Check and monitor the differences from plot to plot and by varieties. A close look into weed incidence and pest infestation along with diseases. Observe water level and need for irrigation. Careful monitoring of harvest and fruit bearing. Ensure routine observations are done on time. 

  • Measurement and log maintenance:

Collect and record measurements accurately in a structured and timely manner. Ensure that the log of records is updated. The records must include, but not be limited to: crop growth and yield measurements; harvest amount and timeline; crop condition; irrigation date and resource used; input use; weather or unusual field events; plot and variety-wise observation; weed count; noting pest/disease or stress symptoms; recording fertilizer/application events; and harvesting activities. 

  • Data quality and reporting:

Maintain complete, legible, and organized registers/logbooks (in Excel). Submit daily/weekly updates to research associates and supervisors. Flag inconsistencies or unusual observations quickly. Support verification of field records. Use prescribed forms, templates and tools.

  • Field operations and coordination:

Daily coordination with the farmers and site officers. Support the farmers with new ideas and knowledge. Assist the research associates, supervisors and implementation partner during field visits. Monitor the safety and proper use of the equipment and electrical devices installed at the site. 

  • Arrange and attend meetings (both online and in-person):

Attend weekly/monthly meetings (online/in-person) with the research associates and the supervisor, along with the implementation partners. Provide work update and suggestions.

The candidate must hold the following qualifications and skill set. 

  1. A BSc/Diploma in Agriculture from any university/institute.
  2. Minimum 1 year of experience in agricultural field activities is preferred. This includes: crop data collection and management, coordination with the farmers, knowledge on diverse crops (both food and non-food crops), etc.
  3. Dedicated and passionate about agriculture with detail-oriented capabilities.
  4. Communication skills, especially to possess the ability to communicate with farmers and labourers.
  5. Verbal ability in Bangla and good written communication skills in English for writing professional emails. 
  6. Proficiency in spreadsheet analysis (e.g. MS Excel) and database management. Able to write emails.
  7. Demonstrated capability to work under pressure and creative thinking in the field of agriculture.
  8. Candidates from Ghior Upozila, Manikganj will be given preference due to the field-based nature of the role.
