Position Summary

BIGD is looking for Data Associate(s) who will work in a team that is responsible for survey programming on SurrveyCTO and ensuring data quality control measures. The Data Associate(s) will actively contribute to enhancing BIGD’s capacity in data collection activities. The incumbent will report to the Coordinator, Data and Field Management, BIGD, BRAC University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Programming the survey instruments on SurveyCTO and bench testing
  • Identifying and solving technical errors in SurveyCTO programming
  • Conducting regular data cleaning in STATA and checking for data errors to ensure data quality. Monitoring the data collection activities of enumerators and field supervisors
  • Conducting field visits to supervise and oversee the data collection process
  • Communicating with the enumerators to resolve any challenges and verify questionable survey data
  • Assisting the Data Coordinator in preparing reports and implementing notes
  • Translating survey questionnaires and supporting documents when required
  • Demonstrating a willingness to work extra hours, including holidays, in case of looming deadlines
  • Maintaining regular communication with local authorities and supporting stakeholders as needed for the survey
  • Undertaking other relevant tasks assigned by the Coordinator

Qualifications

  • Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from any reputed university
  • Proven expertise in MS Excel, SurveyCTO, and STATA
  • Sound knowledge of the data collection process
  • One year of experience in data management, coordinating data collection, and survey coding using SurveyCTO or similar software is preferred but not required
  • For the position of Senior Data Associate, two years of relevant experience is required
  • Strong programming background or a background in Data Science or Computer Science
  • Ability to efficiently fulfill assigned tasks within specified deadlines

Field Researcher

Position Summary:

BIGD is looking for a Field Researcher who will work from BIGD’s field station in Tala Upazila of Satkhira of BIGD on various research projects. The core objective of this field station and the work of the field researcher is to gain deeper insights into rural livelihoods, power structure, and social norms. Field Researchers are responsible for contributing to different stages of the research project.

Responsibilities:

  • Engagement in plan and implementing a portfolio of different field-based research projects assigned by the organization
  • Develop and manage a team of community research volunteers to collect data
  • Manage data collection from primary and secondary sources, analyze data, assist research report writing
  • Provide technical support to the proper implementation of all research protocols including sample selection, instrument designing, data quality, data security, and documentation for reproducibility
  • Responsible for translation and interview transcription
  • Field management of various research projects
  • Effectively coordinate between the research team and various research arms for smooth survey implementation
  • Liaise and facilitate discussions with stakeholders
  • Additional tasks related to qualitative and quantitative study as and when the organization will be assigned

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Completed at least a bachelor’s degree in any social science discipline
  • Aged less than 30 years
  • Willing to be based in the field station
  • Have a keen interest in learning about social issues from primary research
  • Skilled in community rapport building and facilitating group discussions
  • Ability to observe social dynamics as an observant participant
  • Excellent note-taking ability and skilled in typing transcripts in Bangla
  • Familiar with various data collection tools and approaches including structured surveys, interviews, participatory mapping, etc.
  • Familiarity with rural livelihoods, especially in the Southwestern regions of Bangladesh, will be considered as an added advantage

Senior/Communications Associate

Duty Station: Anywhere in Bangladesh

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct surveys to obtain data in SurveyCTO
  • Identify respondents using the survey area’s and design’s selection criteria
  • Cross-check collected data with fellow enumerators
  • Document all necessary information/data using the data collection tools supplied
  • Report to the supervisor about work progress, issues, and challenges faced in the field
  • Obtain permission to collect data in the survey area from the local authority
  • Utilize digital data input technologies to collect information (if provided)
  • Making sure that data is entered accurately
  • Sending the completed interviews at the end of the day
  • Double-checking with respondents to fix any data entry errors made by the enumerator

Research Fellow—Women’s Economic Empowerment and Digital Connectivity Initiative

Position Summary: Brac Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), based at Brac University in Dhaka, Bangladesh, seeks a Research Fellow for the new research initiative on Women’s Economic  Empowerment and Digital Connectivity (WEE-Connect) which is being considered for funding by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. We are looking for a promising early-career researcher with a strong interest in research at the intersection of gender and digitization. The Research Fellow will develop research projects with BIGD around gender and digitization and function as an Investigator in the funded projects.  S/he will also support proposal teams in drafting competitive proposals, facilitate the selection of high-quality research projects, and help monitor the quality of the projects funded through the initiative. The Research Fellow must be trained in empirical research methods and have a passion for digital inclusion and women’s economic empowerment.

Responsibilities:

Research, Proposal Development, and Matchmaking (35%)

  1. Develop research projects for BIGD In collaboration with other researchers and implementing partners, with the potential to apply as a Principal Investigator for competitive project funding to this initiative or other sources
  2. Proactively engage potential researchers, encouraging them to apply for funding to the initiative and supporting them to effectively align research proposals with existing gaps in the literature
  3. Assist with facilitating matchmaking between potential researchers and implementation partners—policymakers, non-profits, multilateral organizations, financial service providers, and commercial enterprises
  4. Personally participate in major global research events and relevant stakeholder events to promote the initiative,  facilitate matchmaking, and disseminate outputs

Facilitating Research Proposal Selection (35%) 

  1. Support the execution and management of Requests for Proposal (RFPs) for soliciting research grant proposals
  2. Help manage the proposal evaluation and selection process
  3. Lead technical communications with research teams and the advisory board
  4. Help strategize ways to improve the quality, quantity, and breadth of proposal submissions to WEE-Connect
  5. Support additional WEE-Connect operations, as needed

Capacity Building (30%)

  1. Support WEE-Connect’s efforts to facilitate best-case practices regarding inclusivity in development research financing, including developing resources and providing direct support to proposal teams
  2. While serving as an Investigator in BIGD research projects, work to build the capacity of Research Associates and staff involved in the projects related to project implementation, data analysis, and academic publishing

Teaching Opportunities (Optional)

Qualifications:

Required

  1. PhD or PhD coursework with 2023 dissertation completion in Economics/Public Policy/Development Studies or other relevant disciplines
  2. Relevant publications, specifically peer-reviewed journal articles
  3. At least two years of experience working as a Research Manager/Coordinator/Associate in a major quantitative field research project
  4. Research skills and experience:
    1. Demonstrated capacity to work with implementing partners and academic leads to set up, support, and analyse rigorous research studies, particularly randomized evaluations
    2. Strong data analysis skills, including data cleaning, management, and econometric analysis for impact  evaluation
    3. Skills in developing research instruments (e.g. questionnaires) and coding for digitizing complex questionnaires
    4. High level of expertise in data analysis software (preferably Stata)
  5. Ability to understand and communicate how rigorous research can influence policy decisions
  6. Exceptional communication skills, including speaking and writing effectively in English

  1. Relevant publications, particularly peer-reviewed journal articles

  2. Proactively build relationships with potential implementation partners and international researchers for developing research projects
  3. Be responsible for the maintenance of research quality and ethical standards
  4. Develop analytical frameworks and provide technical support in data analysis
  5. Write research reports and journal articles
  6. Build the capacity of research associates and other staff on high-quality study implementation, data analysis, and academic publishing
  7. Support the development of BIGD’s research quality management system
  8. Be responsible for strategic communication with implementers, external researchers, and donors
  9. Participate in research uptake initiatives of BIGD
  10. There is the potential to teach academic classes offered by BIGD, for which s/he will be compensated separately, according to BIGD policy (optional)

Qualifications

Required

  • PhD or PhD coursework with anticipated dissertation completed within a reasonably close time frame
  • Relevant publications, specifically peer-reviewed journal articles
  • Research skills and experience
    • Demonstrated capacity to work with implementing partners and academic leads to set up, support, and analyses rigorous research studies, particularly randomized evaluations
    • Strong data analysis skills, including data cleaning, management, and econometric analysis for impact evaluation
    • Skills in developing research instruments (e.g. questionnaire) and coding for digitizing complex questionnaires
    • High level of expertise in data analysis software (preferably Stata)
  • Exceptional communication skills, including speaking and writing effectively in English

Preferred

  • Experience working as a Research Manager/Coordinate/Associate in a major quantitative field-research project
  • Sound knowledge of the current scenario and major trends of empirical research in social science
  • Verbal and aural language proficiency in Bangla

Reporting and base

The position will report to the Senior Research Fellow and Lead, Economics Cluster, and will be based in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
