BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD)—in collaboration with Interdisciplinary Knowledge Initiatives, Bangladesh—hosted a three-day-long workshop on Thinking Qualitatively: Principles of Qualitative and Ethnographic Research, conducted by Professor Shahaduz Zaman, from September 18–20, 2023 at Brac University.
The intensive three-day workshop offered theoretical and hands-on training on qualitative methods, equipping professionals, researchers, and policymakers with knowledge on the different methodological approaches to qualitative and ethnographic research. Participants at the workshop also gained insights on the core skills required for interviewing, running focus groups, conducting ethnographic observations, and data analysis. Workshop attendees included researchers and development practitioners affiliated with public sector institutes, NGOs, academia, research institutions, and other civil society organizations.
Professor Shahaduz Zaman has an interdisciplinary background with a PhD in Medical Anthropology, a Master’s in Public Health, and Bachelor’s in Medicine. He is currently working as a Professor in Medical Anthropology and Global Health, at the University of Sussex, UK. Professor Zaman has vast experience in conducting qualitative and ethnographic research in various settings, including South Asia, Africa, and Mediterranean countries. He has led several qualitative method courses in universities in the global South and North. Dr. Shahaduz Zaman is also a prominent Bengali literary writer.
