How can Bangladesh make urban transport policy more inclusive while protecting the livelihoods that depend on it?
At this বিআইজিডি গবেষণার খোঁজখবর, BIGD Researchers James W. Khakshi and Faruq Hossain presented their ongoing research, “Contested Mobilities: Understanding the Political Ecology, Livelihoods and Policy Futures of Rickshaws in Urban Bangladesh.”
Drawing on a mixed-methods study conducted in Dhaka and Barishal, the research examines the social, political, and institutional factors shaping the governance of battery-assisted rickshaws. The study highlights the role of informal garages in supporting the sector and the limited participation of drivers and other frontline stakeholders in policy decisions, while also exploring the pressures created by restrictions and policy uncertainty.
