Dissemination Event: Environmental and Economic Impact of Agrivoltaics in Bangladesh

The project is funded by H&M Foundation and is being implemented in partnership with the Bright Green Energy Foundation (BGEF), which hosts the pilot site on 1.3 bighas of land in Manikganj. The research is also expanding to other regions of Bangladesh, with preliminary field visits conducted in Moulvibazar and Maona (Gazipur) to examine agrivoltaic performance across different agroclimatic zones. Next sites will be factory in Gazipur and tea garden in Moulvibazar. We will be testing grid connection and direct power provision factories.

In addition to BGEF, led by Dr. Dipal Barua and serving as the principal implementation partner, the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at BRAC University provides technical consultation on photovoltaic systems and the solar energy component of the project, while BRAC Climate Change Programme (CCP) contributes agricultural expertise. The study investigates how panel placement, tilt, mounting structures, panel types, and crop selection influence agricultural productivity, electricity generation, soil conditions, and overall economic viability. Crop yields and production costs are compared across equivalent agricultural, solar-only, and agrivoltaic plots. The technical aspects of the study, including structural engineering, agricultural systems, and electrical components, are being examined in depth and are discussed in subsequent sections. Data is collected from the three experimental systems.  Key performance indicators include electricity output, revenues, and operational costs for solar providers, as well as input costs, yields, and crop revenues for farmers. Process documentation is also being maintained throughout implementation. The analysis will determine whether dual-income generation from agrivoltaics can outperform the combined returns of separate agricultural and solar land use.

Beyond techno-economic viability, the study integrates GIS analysis, localized surveys, and qualitative ground-truthing to evaluate how historical solar energy expansion has affected communities, with a particular focus on women workers. These insights will inform actionable design principles to ensure that Bangladesh’s transition to AgriPV systems is both just and gender-inclusive. The program also examines the energy policy landscape of Bangladesh, including existing challenges and potential amendments needed to enable the scaling up of renewable energy alternatives.
