Sharique-III is a SDC funded consortium project on local governance and development. The consortium is comprised of HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation and BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD) of BRAC University. The project is being implemented through an independent project implementation unit with a number of staff under the leadership of an international Project Director. BIGD as a consortium partner has some project management obligations. In addition, BIGD holds technical responsibility to conduct action and policy research on local governance in Bangladesh and to help prepare policy briefs so as to influence policies. The third Phase of the program started in September 2013 and will continue until December 2016.

Sharique Roundtable discussion on `Strengthening Women’s Representation in Local Government’,
in cooperation with HELVETAS Swiss Inter cooperation (HSI) and Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) on March 20, 2016

SHARIQUE Goal: Contribute to the empowerment of local citizens to make and implement inclusive, gender sensitive and pro-poor collective choices about their lives and livelihoods through more democratic, transparent, inclusive and effective local government systems.

The third phase of Sharique focuses on the strategic planning and fiscal autonomy of the local governments, as well as poverty reduction and social inclusiveness. Compared to Phases I & II, Phase III aims to influence policies and practices at national level through promoting and sharing its good practices and strengthening research initiatives. The project covers 207 Union Parishads in the districts of Rajshahi, Sunamganj, Chapai Nawabganj and Khulna. It addresses both demand and supply side responsiveness and capacity building issues in its efforts to make governance work for poor and disadvantaged people in particular.
