Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, Chairperson, BRAC and Board of Trustees, BRAC University hosted a lunch for Mr. Jean Lebel, President, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada and his team at BRAC Centre on March 2, 2016. Others present at the meeting were Ms Joanne Charette, Vice-President, Corporate Strategy and Communications, and Dr. Anindya Chatterjee, Regional Director, Asia, both from IDRC; and Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman, Executive Director, Ms. SimeenMahmud, Head (Ad interim), Gender Cluster & CGST; Dr. Shanawez Hossain, Research Fellow, from BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), BRAC university.

The President was keen to learn about the challenges Bangladesh on its ‘road’ to greater prosperity. Sir Abed singled out education and education quality as the greatest challenge facing Bangladesh. There was a broader discussion on the key challenges following these remarks, in which both President Lebel, Sir Abed and BIGD researchers present also participated. The discussion remained on a ‘broader plain’, given the high level nature of the visit. Sir Abed outlined BRAC’s future strategy and its activities. President Lebel thanked Sir Abed for hosting the lunch and said it was a privilege to meet a person of this stature in person and to be invited to a lunch by him. It was a highly successful event.

BIGD-IDRC discuss development challenges

BIGD organized a breakfast meeting for visiting International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canada team on March 3, 2016 at Dhaka. BIGD Executive Director Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman welcomed IDRC team led by IDRC President Mr. Jean Lebel.

The discussion at the meeting included contemporary development issues and challenges of Bangladesh and that of BIGD.  President Lebel noted that this was his first visit to Bangladesh and he was very impressed by the ‘energy’ and vibrancy he felt in exchanging views with different stakeholders. He felt Bangladesh has great potential and seemed confident that it would achieve its development goals. He was committed to keeping IDRC fully engaged in Bangladesh and welcomed any ideas we might have in this regard. While the future of TTI beyond the current phase was not yet determined, he said that IDRC is doing its best to shape future thinking about fund raising for think tanks in an environment of shrinking ‘resource space’. He appreciated IDRC’s relations with BIGD and was encouraged by its recent accomplishments.

BIGD ED mentioned that for sustaining development, the country needs to address issues related to good governance and institution building. He highlighted and stressed on the importance of IDRC funding which is playing a crucial role in strengthening BIGD’s capacity. BIGD researchers explained how BIGD’s research is contributing in development and policy advocacy issues.

The visiting team also included Ms Joanne Charette, Vice-President, Corporate Strategy and Communications, and Dr. Anindya Chatterjee, Regional Director, Asia. Among others, Simeen Mahmud, Head (Ad interim), Gender Cluster & CGST; Shanawez Hossain, Research Fellow, Wahid Abdallah, Visiting Fellow, and Sarwar Jahan Chowdhury, Head of Operations, from BIGD attended the meeting.

Executive Director’s visit to MAGD Programme


Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman, the Executive Director of BIGD, BRAC University visited the Master of Arts in Governance and Development Programme on December 30, 2015 at the BRAC Centre for Development Management (BCM) in Savar.

Dr. Rahman also attended a meeting with the MAGD-7 Batch students. During the visit he interacted with the students and attended a question and answer session with them. Among others Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman, Academic Coordinator of BIGD was also present in the meeting.

His Excellency Mr. Hari Kumar Shrestha, Ambassador of Nepal to Bangladesh, visited MA in Governance and Development (MAGD) programme of BRAC Institute of Governance and Development, BRAC University at the BRAC CDM in Savar, Dhaka on 28 March 2015. Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman, Acting Academic Coordinator and Ekram Hossain, Communications Manager of BIGD welcomed the guests at the BRAC Centre for Development Management (CDM) premises.


To commemorate his visit BIGD accorded a reception programme at the BRAC CDM in presence of MAGD students.  Mr. Ekram Hossain introduced the ambassador to the students, who was accompanied by Mrs. Shakuntala Shrestha and Mr. Nirmal Prasad Bhattarai, the Third Secretary of the Embassy. Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman gave an introduction of BRAC University and the Institute through a presentation.  Mr. Khan Md. Nurul Amin and Mr. Nay Lin, students of MAGD and public servant of Bangladesh and Myanmar respectively, shared their expectations and experience of their study.


The Executive Director of BRAC Institute of Governance and Development (BIGD), Dr. Sultan Hafeez Rahman, attended the MA in Governance and Development (MAGD) spring 2015 semester concluding ceremony at BRAC CDM Savar on 30 April 2015. Dr. Rahman was accompanied by Dr. Rashed Uz Zaman, Academic Coordinator (Acting), BIGD.
