Sultan Mohammed Zakaria
Senior Research Associate
Sultan Mohammed Zakaria is a political analyst at BIGD. He is currently serving as a Senior Research Associate under the Politics and Democratic Governance cluster at BIGD. He joined the Institute (former IGS) in 2007. At BIGD, he teaches two graduate modules: ‘Global Issues in Sustainable Development’ and ‘Politics, Political Economy, and Government of Bangladesh’ in the Master of Development Management and Practice (MDMP), and Master of Development Studies (MDS) programmes respectively.
Being a political analyst, Zakaria draws on insights from democratic and international relations theories and his intimate observations of local and global events to formulate hypotheses about the effects of process, mechanisms, and governance of political institutions, and behavior of actors on the democratic and political outcome, especially in the context of transitional democracies. His research interests also include the issues of democratic deficit across new, transitional, and established democracies; Middle East geopolitics; and regionalism in relation to South Asian economic and political cooperation. He is the co-author of a book - ‘The Real Politics of Bangladesh: The Inside Story of Local Power Brokers’ (with Dr Jonathan Rose, and Barrister Manzoor Hasan). The book empirically studied the role of power brokers in politics and democratic governance in rural Bangladesh.
Zakaria also serves as a Visiting Scholar at Boston University and is currently studying the effect of international migration on democratic change. He held research and academic positions at Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism, and Center for Global Development and Sustainability, Brandeis University; and Department of Sociology, Boston University, USA. He published in referred journals and peer-reviewed publications on Middle East democracy, South Asian geopolitics, and democratic governance in Bangladesh.
Zakaria holds an MA in Sustainable International Development from Brandeis University, USA.
