Dr. Md Shanawez Hossain
Md Shanawez Hossain is a development economist and joined BIGD in August 2015 as Research Fellow. He is Head of the Urban, Climate Change and Environment (UCCE) cluster and Team Leader for one of BIGD’s annual flagship publication State of Cities (SoC) for the year 2016. He is also Team Leader for research on local governance under the SHARIQUE programme funded by HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation. Furthermore, he is involved with number of research projects related to governance, development, social accountability etc. funded by IDRC, Copenhagen Consensus Center, World Bank and DFID. Previously he has held research, teaching and consultancy positions at Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI); Waseda University, Japan; Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOF) Japan, and various non-governmental organizations.
He was a Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholar to pursue PhD in International Development and Policy Studies and Japanese Grant Aid for Human Resources (JDS) Fellow for his M.A degree with major in Economic Development, both from Waseda University, Japan. He has post-graduate degree and training in Climate, Energy and Food Security and Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs from United Nations University (UNU). He has also completed the Building Capacity to Use Research Evidence (BCURE) International Training of Trainers course hosted by Evidence for Policy Design (EPoD) at the Harvard Kennedy School.
Dr. Hossain’s research broadly focuses in the areas of economic and social development and policy studies in the Asia-Pacific regions. In particular, he has experience of research related to poverty and inequality; inclusive growth and quality of life (QoL); regional integration and Asian Century; local governance and social accountability; environment, infrastructure, energy security and education development in developing countries. He has presented research papers in several international conferences and has publications in reputed journals.
